About the Event

Think you can’t bake artisan sourdough at home? Think again! You totally can! In this Family Herbalism/Homesteading Workshop, we will be teaching you how to keep your sourdough starter active and thriving and ways to use the starter for baking all kinds of delicious baked goodies.

It’s unique because it does not require commercial yeast in order to rise.  Instead, it’s made with a live fermented culture, a sourdough starter, which acts as a natural leavening agent. Simply put: a sourdough starter is a live culture made from flour and water.

Your starter must be kept alive with regular feedings of flour and water to maintain its strength for maximum rising power - with each "feeding", a little bit of the culture has to be removed; this is called discard. Instead of "wasting" the discard by pouring it down the sink, bake with it instead! There are all kinds of recipes to make from the sourdough dicard, such as cookies, pancakes, biscuits, pizza dough and more.

In this workshop, we will keep it simple yet efficient, by demonstrating the process and techniques to keeping your sourdough starter flourishing and long lasting to use in your baking. We will be going over the methods to feeding your starter and how to preserve it - what an active starter looks like - when to use your starter for baking- and all the ways you can bake with sourdough discard. We will also, demonstrate how to make a batch of Chocolate Chip Cookies have cookies ready freshly baked for your enjoyment - a sweet and pleasant taste for your taste buds.

This class is great for all ages, even the little ones - we are firm believers in getting children in the kitchen while they are young, as they enjoy it as much as we do! Anyone can do this workshop and learn how to bake with sourdough.

We will have our dehydrated sourdough culture from our personal batch (which is nearly 5 years old, her name is Gracie) for sale at the workshop too! Our starter has been cared for and tended to with so much love, and we have a deep reverence for all the delicious baked goods we have indulged in from "Gracie".

Price of workshop: ($25) per family

Includes freshly baked cookies for your enjoyment during the demonstration.  Payments accepted: Cash, Venmo, Zelle, Checks Payments either beforehand or at the door.
